  • INTEGRATE - Driving Excellence in Integrative Cancer Research through Innovative Biomedical Infrastructures
    INTEGRATE promotes a novel IT-based approach aimed at enabling multidisciplinary collaboration in oncology research. This will be achieved through the creation of innovative biomedical infrastructures; emphasis on standards-based harmonization of efforts; the preservation, management and large-scale sharing of multi-level data; and the development of new methodologies and predictive multi-scale models in cancer. The INTEGRATE newsletters will describe aspects of the research problems in focus, inform readers about challenges encountered and progress made towards overcoming them, and refer to relevant project deliverables. We would like to engage our readers in discussions about data sharing and collaboration in the biomedical domain, as well as the scientific issues around information integration and interoperability.

  • Network of Excellence in Internet Science - Plenary Meeting
    The objective of the Network of Excellence (NoE) is to allow an open and productive dialogue between all the disciplines which study the Internet systems under any technological or humanistic perspective, and which in turn are being transformed by the continuous advances in Internet functionalities and applications. To achieve this objective, the NoE in Internet Science will bring together research institutions focusing on network engineering, computation, complexity, security, trust, mathematics, physics, sociology, game theory, economics, political sciences, humanities, law, energy, transport, artistic expression, and any other relevant social and life sciences. This first workshop is presenting some of its research targets, including aspects of leisure, arts, sustainability, open government, civil hacking, and interactions with the no disconnection strategy. Participation is free but prior registration is required.

In order to ensure that networks keep pace with rising demand for bandwidth and become a platform for innovation, the Digital Agenda for Europe sets ambitious broadband targets and requires EU Member States to implement equally ambitious national broadband plans which define a set of suitable measures to achieve these targets.

    Brussels, 22 December 2011 – Today the European Commission adopted a Decision establishing an eHealth Network, as foreseen by the Directive (2011/24/EU) on Patients' Rights in Cross-border Healthcare. For the first time, EU legislation includes provisions on eHealth with clear objectives to find modern, innovative solutions for providing better and safer healthcare for all Europeans.

    Making Mobile Phones and Services Accessible for Persons with Disabilities is a joint report of the International Telecommunication Union and the Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies. This report contains references to the new legislative and regulatory framework set by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, an important resource for policy makers. It also covers practical elements required for a successful implementation of those programs and policies.

    The field of innovation for social purposes is developing rapidly all over the world, with new institutions and methods, growing confidence and evidence of impact. Social innovators are changing the way governments work, the way civil society achieves impact, and the actions of business. The field combines commitment, experience and energy. But it lacks the systematic and sophisticated infrastructures of support available to other fields – in particular access to appropriate finance and funding. The result is that although there is no shortage of good ideas, far too few achieve the impact they could. The report sets out a vision for where we want to be ten years from now. It highlights how these various infrastructural gaps will need to be overcome in order for the field to develop to maturity and puts forward recommendations for how we can achieve this.
