EU research breakthrough will cut 4G / LTE mobile network energy use in half
The EU-funded project EARTH has received the 2012 "Future Internet Award" prize for developing unprecedented energy efficiency solutions for wireless communication networks. Researchers from companies such as Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Telecom Italia, DOCOMO, and from universities in Belgium, France, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and UK, have optimised the energy use of 4G/LTE (Long-Term Evolution) base stations, which account for the highest energy consumption in the mobile network.

Call for papers - European Journal of ePractice issue: New Business Models in eGovernment
This issue whose submission deadline is 31 May 2012 focuses on possible new business models for eGovernment. Welcome submissions include real-world eGovernment modifications to business models in both the European Union and internationally, including the necessary supporting legal and regulatory frameworks, and public accountability and reassurance (trust) mechanisms; examples of alternative eGovernment business models, such as gains-sharing – including benefits-funded models and shared savings models; enablers and barriers, and cost-benefit analysis of new business models in eGovernment.

The European Commission is organising a conference on sustainable ICT, smart grids and smart cities. The two-day conference will be opened by Commissioners Günther Oettinger and Neelie Kroes. It will bring together policy makers and stakeholders such as telecom companies, energy providers, regulators and consumer organisations. It will provide a platform for discussions on the challenges faced in deploying smart grids, be they technical, regulatory, financial or linked to public acceptance. The conference will investigate how ICT can make our cities greener by an exchange of best practices. It will also touch upon the important issue of how to deliver transparent metrics around the positive contribution of ICT to solving our energy and climate problems. Registration is free of charge.

7th PEPPOL Conference (Pan-European Public Procurement On-Line)
The event will provide insight into the results and the future follow-up of the PEPPOL project. Interested parties will be provided with examples of pilot achievements and other first-hand information about PEPPOL. The aim is to show decision makers of the European Commission, Member States, public sector entities, suppliers and service providers the long term sustainability of PEPPOL through specific initiatives. As part of the Large Scale Pilot projects (LSPs) of the European Commission, PEPPOL is building the basis for seamless cross-border eGovernment services in the single market, to realise the goals of the Digital Agenda for Europe. The LSPs were created under the Information and Communication Technologies Policy Support Programme (ICTPSP), a part of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) of the European Commission. The CIP ICTPSP aims at stimulating smart sustainable and inclusive growth by accelerating the wider uptake and best use of innovative digital technologies and content by citizens, governments and businesses.
